SourceA new study published in Pediatrics Magazine has revealed that raunchy rap lyrics are likely to push teenagers to have sex before the age of 16.
After analyzing 170 popular songs, including cuts from Nelly, Ja Rule, Jay-Z and Destiny's Child, the study found that 40% of the lyrics featured sexual content.
According to the study, black teens were more likely to view racy material, but are also more impressionable to parents and friends than the media. Meanwhile, white teens were more influenced by media messages and those who listened or watched explicit music were twice more likely to have sex.
"Media is a powerful sex educator, but not always in the best interest of children," Jane Brown of the University of North Carolina, chief researcher of the study, told the Daily News.
For the study, researchers interviewed 1,017 black and white teens from middle schools in North Carolina. The teens were evaluated at age 12 to 14 and again when they reached 16.
Though "The Simpsons" was the most popular TV show among teens, UPN's "WWE Smackdown" and MTV's "Total Request Live" were the shows that included the most sexual content.
